Tucked away in the misty mountains of northern Vietnam, Sapa is one of those places that feels completely different from anywhere else in the country. Cooler temperatures, rolling rice terraces, dramatic valleys, and traditional villages make it an unmissable stop on any Vietnam itinerary.
Whether you’re here for trekking, views, or simply to slow down and breathe in the mountain air, these are the best things to do in Sapa – based on my own experience exploring this beautiful region.
1. Trek Through the Rice Terraces of Muong Hoa Valley
If there’s one thing you must do in Sapa, it’s trekking through the Muong Hoa Valley.
This stunning valley is famous for its cascading rice terraces, winding rivers, and tiny villages scattered through the hills. A guided trek typically takes you through Lao Chai and Ta Van villages.
The walks are moderate, scenic, and filled with photo-worthy moments at every turn. Plus, trekking with a local guide gives you insight into daily life, farming traditions, and village culture.

2. Ride the Cable Car to Fansipan Peak
Standing tall above the clouds, Fansipan is known as the Roof of Indochina and it’s one of the most popular things to do in Sapa.
You can reach the summit via:
- A scenic cable car ride (one of the longest in the world)
- Optional funicular trains and stair climbs
On a clear day, the views stretch endlessly across mountain ranges. Even on misty days, the experience feels otherworldly.

3. Explore Cat Cat Village
For an easy cultural experience close to town, visit Cat Cat Village.
This village is:
- Walkable from Sapa town
- Filled with traditional houses, waterfalls, and bridges
- More touristy, but very accessible
It’s a great option if you’re short on time or want something gentler than a full-day trek.
4. Visit Silver Waterfall & Love Waterfall
Just outside town, Silver Waterfall is one of the most impressive waterfalls in the area, especially after rainfall.
Nearby, you’ll find Love Waterfall, reached via a scenic forest walk. Together, they make a lovely half-day escape into nature.

5. Wander Around Sapa Lake
Right in the heart of town, Sapa Lake is perfect for a relaxed stroll.
Come here to:
- Walk off a trek
- Enjoy the mountain reflections
- Grab a coffee at a nearby café
It’s especially peaceful early in the morning or at sunset.
6. Browse the Local Markets
Sapa’s markets are full of colour, character, and handmade goods. You’ll find:
- Embroidered textiles
- Traditional clothing
- Local produce and snacks
They’re a great place to pick up souvenirs and support local artisans – just remember to bargain politely.
7. Eat Local Mountain Food
Cool mountain evenings call for warm, hearty meals. While in Sapa, try:
- Hotpot (perfect for chilly nights)
- Grilled meats and vegetables
- Fresh noodle soups
There’s nothing better than warming up after a long day of exploring.
8. Enjoy a Coffee with a View
Sapa has no shortage of cafés with valley or mountain views. Sitting with a Vietnamese coffee while watching the mist roll through the hills is one of those simple travel moments that sticks with you.
