If the idea of spending 6–12 hours on a bus in Vietnam makes you cringe, I’m here to tell you something that genuinely surprised me: VIP sleeper buses in Vietnam are actually really comfortable.
I took two VIP sleeper buses during my trip: one from Ninh Binh to Sapa (around 8 hours) and another from Sapa to Hanoi (around 6 hours) and both experiences were excellent. Clean, spacious, and way more relaxing than I expected.

What Is a VIP Sleeper Bus in Vietnam?
A VIP sleeper bus is a long-distance coach designed for tourists and ultimate comfort, featuring individual bunk-style lay-flat seats instead of traditional upright bus seats.
Think:
- Single pod-style bunk beds (not shared – though you can book buses with this option)
- Reclining or fully lay-flat seats that lets you stretch out
- Privacy curtains (major win)
- Free Wifi
- Charging ports for your phone
- Air conditioning
- A blanket
- Regular rest stops
- One of the buses I was on even had a massage remote for the chair!
They’re a popular way to travel between cities in Vietnam, especially for routes like Hanoi–Sapa, Ninh Binh–Sapa, Hue–Hoi An, and more. It felt much more like a cozy capsule than a bus seat – perfect for zoning out, watching something on your phone, or napping.
What to Expect on a VIP Sleeper Bus
I took a VIP sleeper bus on my trip from Ninh Binh to Sapa (8 hours) and from Sapa to Hanoi (6 hours) and both journeys turned out to be incredibly comfortable. I booked through the 12Go Asia app (which I would definitely recommend!) with HK Buslines and G8 Open Tour bus lines – both were excellent and offered pretty much the same experience.
I traveled during the day, which I personally prefer. The roads to Sapa are winding, and while the bus was smooth, I think nighttime travel might feel bumpier and a rough night sleep (still better than a regular bus though). But I know for those travelers who have itineraries that are short or want to save money on a night’s accommodation – booking an overnight sleeper bus would be a great option.
I also requested hotel pick up and drop off which most companies offer, making it an easy experience without having to think about how to get to and from the bus terminal.
When boarding the bus, the driver will give you a plastic bag to put your shoes in upon entering the bus and then you don’t need to put your shoes on again until the end of the journey as they provide little slippers at each rest stop for you to use.
Rest Stops
The bus stopped every 1–2 hours for bathroom breaks, snacks and stretching your legs for around 20-30mins each stop. The regular stops made a huge difference and helped the journey feel manageable. The rest stops offer plenty of snack and food options – be sure to bring cash for these stops for both the snack vendors and the restroom fees.
Day vs Night VIP Sleeper Buses: Which Is Better?
Both are popular, but here’s my honest take:
Daytime Travel (What I Did)
Pros:
- Smoother-feeling ride
- Easier to relax if you’re not a deep sleeper
- You can enjoy the scenery (especially to and from Sapa into the rice fields and mountains!)
Night Travel
Pros:
- Saves on accommodation
- More comfortable and sleep-friendly than a regular bus
Cons:
- Roads can feel bumpier at night
- Light sleepers might wake up often
- When you arrive you will need to wait until check in time in the afternoon for your hotel/hostel
Even so, a VIP sleeper bus is still far more comfortable than a standard bus, especially for overnight routes. It all comes down to your personal preference and how well you sleep while traveling.
What to Bring on a VIP Sleeper Bus
- Small backpack (large luggage goes underneath)
- Headphones
- Eye mask (especially for night travel)
- Light jacket or hoodie (AC can be cold)
- Snacks and water
- Power bank (charging ports exist, but backups are never a bad thing)

100% yes. VIP sleeper buses in Vietnam are a fantastic option if you want:
- Comfort on long distances
- A budget-friendly alternative to flights
- A more relaxed travel day
After I researched horror stories about the overnight trains in Vietnam, I was pleasantly surprise with my VIP bus experience. I’d happily take one again and I honestly wish more countries offered buses like this.
