What Is Trang An?

Trang An Scenic Landscape Complex is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located just outside Ninh Binh town. It’s famous for its network of rivers, caves, valleys, and ancient temples, all explored by traditional sampan boat.

Unlike Tam Coc, Trang An is:

• Wider and more expansive
• Less affected by seasonal water levels
• More cave-focused and temple-rich

It’s also extremely well-organized and easy to visit, making it perfect for first-time visitors to Ninh Binh.

The Trang An Boat Ride: What to Expect

Your Trang An experience begins at the main ticket office, where you’ll choose one of several scenic routes. Each boat carries up to four passengers, plus a local rower who does all the hard work (your job is to relax and take photos).

The ride includes:

• Slow river cruising
• Passing through multiple caves (some long, some short)
• Stops at ancient pagodas and temples
• Jaw-dropping limestone scenery in every direction

The entire experience lasts 2.5 to 3 hours, depending on the route.

Trang An Route Options (Which One Should You Choose?)

There are usually three main routes available. While exact routes can change slightly, here’s a general breakdown:

Route 1 – Most Popular & Balanced

• Several cave passages
• Multiple temple stops
• Great mix of scenery and culture

This is the best option if it’s your first visit. This is the one I did and it was 2 hours of absolutely incredible views.

Route 2 – Longest & Most Scenic

• More caves
• Longer time on the water
• Fewer crowds

Perfect if you want a slower, more immersive experience.

Route 3 – Shorter & More Relaxed

• Fewer caves
• Quicker ride
• Good if you’re short on time

Tip: Ask the staff which route they recommend that day – they’re very helpful.

Best Time to Visit Trang An

Timing makes a big difference for crowd levels and comfort.

Best time of day:

• Early morning (7:00–9:00 AM)
• Late afternoon (after 3:00 PM)

Best months:

• March–May: lush greenery and warm weather
• September–October: cooler temps and clear skies

Avoid weekends and holidays if possible – Trang An is popular with local tourists too.

Trang An Entrance Fees & Hours

• Ticket price: Around 250,000 VND per person
• Hours: Typically 7:00 AM – 4:00 PM (last boat departures mid-afternoon)

• Sit near the front of the boat if possible
• Use a wide-angle lens or phone camera
• Be ready for low light inside caves
• Keep your camera secure – no sudden movements

Is the Trang An Boat Ride Worth It?

Absolutely yes!!!

The Trang An boat ride is peaceful, scenic, and unlike anything else in Vietnam. Floating through caves, temples, and towering limestone cliffs feels almost surreal and it’s one of those experiences where you don’t need to rush or “do” anything. Just sit back and take it all in.

If you’re visiting Ninh Binh, Trang An should be at the very top of your list.
