If you’ve ever dreamed of drifting past towering limestone cliffs, cycling through rice fields, and exploring ancient temples tucked into mountains – Ninh Binh is about to steal your heart.
Often called “Ha Long Bay on land,” Ninh Binh is one of the most beautiful places in Vietnam and an easy escape from Hanoi. Whether you’re here for a day trip or staying overnight (highly recommended), these are the best things to do in Ninh Binh to make the most of your time.
1. Take a Boat Ride in Trang An or Tam Coc
A boat ride is the must-do experience in Ninh Binh and it is even more magical than it looks in photos.
Trang An Boat Tour (UNESCO World Heritage Site)
- Scenic river routes through caves and temples
- Rowed by locals using their feet (iconic!)
- More structured and slightly longer routes (my boat ride was 2 hours!)
Tam Coc Boat Ride
- Passes through rice fields and limestone karsts
- Especially beautiful during rice harvest season (May–June)
- More relaxed and closer to town
Which should you choose?
If you want jaw-dropping scenery and a UNESCO badge, go Trang An. If you want a laid-back vibe and golden rice fields, Tam Coc is your winner.

2. Visit Bich Dong Pagoda
One of the most peaceful and underrated spots in Ninh Binh, Bich Dong Pagoda is built directly into a limestone mountain and surrounded by lotus ponds and rice fields.
The pagoda is split into three levels:
- Lower Pagoda near the entrance
- Middle Pagoda tucked into the cliff
- Upper Pagoda with countryside views
It’s quiet, atmospheric, and perfect if you’re looking to escape the crowds.
3. Cycle Through the Rice Fields
Renting a bike in Tam Coc and cycling through the surrounding countryside is one of the best ways to experience Ninh Binh.
You’ll pass:
- Bright green rice paddies
- Water buffalo chilling in the shade
- Limestone mountains rising dramatically around you
It’s flat, easy, and incredibly scenic — even casual cyclists will love it.
4. Hike to the Viewpoint at Hang Mua (Mua Cave)
If you’re up for a workout, Hang Mua offers one of the most iconic views in Vietnam.
Climb around 500 stone steps to the top, where you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views over Tam Coc’s winding river and rice fields below. Yes, it’s steep. Yes, you’ll sweat. And yes – it’s absolutely worth it.
Pro tip: Go early morning to avoid the crowds or late afternoon to avoid the heat.
5. Explore Hoa Lu Ancient Capital
Step back in time at Hoa Lu, Vietnam’s ancient capital during the 10th and 11th centuries. Set against dramatic limestone cliffs, this historic site features beautifully preserved temples dedicated to King Dinh and King Le.
It’s an easy stop between boat tours and pagodas and adds a fascinating layer of history to your Ninh Binh visit.
6. Wander Trang An Scenic Landscape Complex
Beyond the boat ride, the Trang An Scenic Landscape Complex is worth exploring on land too. The area is dotted with pagodas, viewpoints, and walking paths surrounded by lush greenery and towering karsts.
It’s calm, beautiful, and feels far removed from the bustle of Vietnam’s cities.
7. Eat Local: Try Goat Meat & Crispy Rice
Ninh Binh has its own local specialties – and they’re surprisingly delicious.
Must-tries include:
- Goat meat (thịt dê) — grilled, steamed, or stir-fried
- Crispy rice (cơm cháy) topped with savory sauces
- Fresh spring rolls and noodle dishes
Tam Coc has plenty of relaxed restaurants where you can refuel after a day of exploring.
8. Stay Overnight (Or Two!)
While Ninh Binh is often visited as a day trip from Hanoi, staying overnight lets you experience its quieter, more magical side. I would recommend 3-nights if your itinerary allows to give you two full days to enjoy everything Ninh Binh has to offer.
Early mornings and sunsets bring:
- Misty rice fields
- Golden light over limestone cliffs
- Fewer tour groups and a slower pace
- Cute homestays!
It’s easily one of my favorite places in all of Vietnam.
