If you’re planning a trip to Vietnam, chances are a Ha Long Bay overnight cruise is already high on your bucket list – and for good reason. Limestone karsts, emerald water, dreamy sunrises, and just enough luxury to make you forget you’re backpacking Asia.
But if you’re anything like me, before booking anything you might be wondering…
What actually happens on an overnight Ha Long Bay cruise?
Is it rushed? Is it fancy? Is it worth staying the night?
Here’s exactly what to expect, based on my own overnight cruise experience – from hotel pickup in Hanoi to sunrise views and sailing back the next morning.

Morning Pick-Up in Hanoi (Limousine Bus Life)
The day starts early, but in the best way possible. My cruise included a limousine-style bus pickup directly from my hotel in Hanoi, which instantly made the experience feel smooth and stress-free.
The ride to Ha Long Bay takes around 2.5–3 hours, with comfy reclining seats, air conditioning, and usually a short rest stop along the way. Honestly? A far cry from the chaotic bus journeys I was bracing myself for.
Cruise Check-In & Tender Boat Transfer
Once you arrive at the harbour, you’ll check in at the cruise terminal before being transferred to your cruise ship via a small tender boat.
This is where it really hits you – towering limestone cliffs, calm water, and that wow, I’m actually here feeling. Cameras at the ready.
Welcome Aboard & Buffet Lunch
As soon as you step onto the cruise ship, you’re welcomed onboard and guided to lunch – a buffet meal served while the boat begins cruising through Ha Long Bay.
Expect a mix of:
- Vietnamese dishes
- Western options
- Seafood
- Fresh fruit
Eating lunch while gliding past karsts? Iconic. No notes.
Settling Into the Cabin (Prepare to Be Shocked)
After lunch, it’s time to check into your room — and this is where my expectations were completely blown away.
My cabin had:
- A huge bathtub
- Floor-to-ceiling windows
- A private balcony with uninterrupted bay views
I fully expected “nice for a boat,” but this was genuinely luxury hotel on water energy. If you’re debating whether an overnight cruise is worth it – the room alone might convince you.
A Heads-Up: Floating Snack Boats
One thing that surprised me?
Small motorboats occasionally pull up alongside the cruise ship selling snacks, drinks, and random souvenirs.
They’re harmless, but it can feel a little jarring if you’re not expecting it (like when I was in the bathtub!). Just know you’re absolutely not obligated to buy anything – the cruise itself is already fully catered.
Afternoon Adventure: Bamboo Boat Ride
In the afternoon, we hopped off the ship for an included excursion – a bamboo boat ride through calm waters and hidden corners of the bay.
These are rowed by locals and are incredibly peaceful, offering a closer look at the karsts and floating landscapes. It’s slow, scenic, and a lovely contrast to the bigger cruise ship experience.
Dinner: A Surprisingly Fancy Set Menu
Dinner was a set menu – and it was far fancier than I expected.
Our meal included:
- Pumpkin soup
- Salmon starter
- Pineapple topped with a king prawn
- Sea bass for the main
- Mango dessert
It felt refined without being stuffy, and dining as the sun faded over the bay made it extra special.
Evening Activities: Foot Baths & Squid Fishing
After dinner, the vibe shifts into full relaxation mode.
Some cruises offer:
- Foot bath treatments (yes please)
- Squid fishing off the back of the boat
Even if you don’t catch anything (one person actually did on our cruise!), it’s a fun, low-key way to end the night under the stars.
Sunrise in Ha Long Bay (Worth the Wake-Up)
Waking up to sunrise over Ha Long Bay is hands-down one of the most magical moments of the entire trip.
The water is glassy, the karsts glow softly, and everything feels incredibly calm. Whether you’re sipping coffee on your balcony or wandering the deck with a camera, it’s a moment you’ll remember long after you leave Vietnam.
Morning Excursion: Cat Ba Island Cave Visit
After breakfast, we headed out for our final activity – a visit to Trung Trang Cave on Cat Ba Island.
The cave itself was impressive, with towering chambers and walkways… but the real star?
A monkey casually hanging out near the entrance, reminding us we were very much in nature.
Brunch, Check-Out & Heading Back
Back on board, we enjoyed a relaxed brunch before checking out and disembarking around 11:00am.
From there:
- You can return to Hanoi via limousine bus
- Or, like I did, request a transfer onward to Ninh Binh or your next location, which was a perfect next stop
Is a Ha Long Bay Overnight Cruise Worth It?
Absolutely!! 1000% lives up to the hype.
An overnight cruise offers:
- A slower, more immersive experience
- Sunset and sunrise views
- More space, comfort, and calm
- Activities that day trips simply don’t have time for
