1. Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park

Travel time from Hakuba: ~1.5–2 hours

Visiting the Snow Monkeys of Jigokidani is one of hands-down one of the most popular day trips from Hakuba – and for good reason. Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park is famous for its wild Japanese macaques who soak in steaming hot springs, especially during winter.

After a scenic walk through a snowy forest, you’ll reach the hot spring area where the monkeys lounge, play, and occasionally steal the spotlight from your camera roll.

The easiest way to visit the snow monkeys is as part of a guided tour like this one – I loved it!

Best time to visit:
Winter (December–March) for snowy scenes, but monkeys are here year-round.

2. Matsumoto & Matsumoto Castle

Travel time from Hakuba: ~1–1.5 hours

Matsumoto makes an easy and rewarding day trip from Hakuba, especially if you’re craving a dose of history and culture. The highlight is Matsumoto Castle, one of Japan’s most beautiful original castles, often nicknamed the “Crow Castle” thanks to its striking black exterior.

After exploring the castle, wander the charming streets nearby, visit local museums, and enjoy lunch at one of the many cozy cafés or soba restaurants.

Don’t miss:
• Climbing inside the castle
• Nakamachi Street for traditional shops
• Local soba noodles (a Nagano specialty!)

3. Nagano City & Zenko-ji Temple

Travel time from Hakuba: ~1 hour

Nagano City is best known for Zenko-ji Temple, one of Japan’s most important Buddhist temples and a must-see while in the region. The temple grounds are peaceful, historic, and incredibly atmospheric – especially in the early morning or late afternoon.

You can also explore the lively streets around the temple, sample local snacks, and learn more about the city’s Olympic history from the 1998 Winter Games.

I visited the Zenko-ji Temple as part of a guided day trip like this one which included visiting the Snow Monkeys.

Tip: Try the underground “pillar of enlightenment” experience beneath the main hall – it’s dark, a little spooky, and surprisingly memorable.

4. Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route

Travel time from Hakuba: ~2–3 hours (one way, route dependent)

If you’re visiting in late spring or summer, the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is one of the most spectacular day trips near Hakuba. This famous mountain route crosses the Northern Japanese Alps using a combination of buses, cable cars, and ropeways.

The highlight? The legendary snow walls in spring, where towering walls of snow line the road – sometimes over 15 meters high.

Best time to visit:
April–June for snow walls, July–September for alpine hiking and views.

5. Kamikochi Valley

Travel time from Hakuba: ~2–3 hours

Kamikochi is a dream destination for nature lovers and one of the most beautiful alpine valleys in Japan. With crystal-clear rivers, dramatic mountain peaks, and well-maintained walking trails, it’s perfect for an easy hiking day.

You don’t need to be an experienced hiker – there are plenty of flat, scenic paths suitable for all fitness levels. This trip is easy to do through a guided day tour like this one.

Highlights:
• Kappa Bridge
• Azusa River
• Views of the Hotaka mountain range

6. Obuse Town

Travel time from Hakuba: ~1.5 hours

Small, charming, and full of character, Obuse is known for its connection to ukiyo-e artist Hokusai, as well as its chestnut sweets and sake breweries.

It’s a relaxed and less touristy day trip that pairs beautifully with a visit to nearby Nagano City.

Must-try:
Chestnut desserts (Obuse is famous for them!)
Local sake or craft beer

7. Hot Spring Escape: Onsen Day Trip

Travel time from Hakuba: Varies

If your legs are feeling sore after skiing or hiking, a nearby onsen town makes the perfect low-effort day trip from Hakuba. Areas around Nagano Prefecture are packed with traditional hot spring baths where you can soak and unwind.

Look for outdoor rotenburo baths for the ultimate Japanese onsen experience – especially magical in winter.

Getting Around: How to Do Hakuba Day Trips

Train + bus: Great for Nagano City, Matsumoto, and Obuse
Rental car: Best for Kamikochi and Alpine Route flexibility
Guided tours: Ideal in winter when roads and weather can be unpredictable

Where to Stay in Hakuba

Accommodation Recommendations:
Luxury: Courtyard by Marriott Hakuba
Mid-Range: Hotel Hakuba
Budget: Hakuba share

Hakuba Is More Than Just a Ski Town

Hakuba is an incredible destination on its own, but what really makes it special is how many unforgettable experiences sit just beyond the mountains. Whether you’re meeting snow monkeys, exploring historic castles, or hiking through alpine valleys, these top day trips from Hakuba add depth and variety to any Japan itinerary.

So yes – hit the slopes, soak in the onsen, and then get out there and explore. The Japanese Alps have so much more to offer than you might expect.
