Planning your first trip to San Francisco? Get ready for cable cars, rolling hills, and some of the most iconic views in the world. But beyond the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz, there are a few things every first-time visitor should know to make the most of their time in the city by the bay. From packing advice to getting around and must-try eats, here are my top San Francisco travel tips.

1. Dress in Layers (Even in Summer!)

San Francisco weather is famously unpredictable. It can be sunny and warm one minute, foggy and chilly the next. Locals will tell you: always bring a jacket. Even in summer, temperatures can drop quickly, especially near the water or when the fog rolls in (I visited in July and wore my jacket most of the time!). Layers are your best friend here.

2. Learn to Love the Fog

Speaking of fog, you’ll probably meet Karl the Fog (yes, the locals named it). Don’t be disappointed if the Golden Gate Bridge is shrouded in mist – it’s part of San Francisco’s charm. And sometimes if you’re lucky enough, the fog clears to reveal jaw-dropping views.

3. Use Public Transport (and Your Feet)

Parking in San Francisco can be pricey and stressful. Luckily, the city has great public transport – MUNI buses, historic cable cars, and BART trains that connect to the airport and the East Bay. I bought a day pass on the MUNI app that included the cable car which was great value for money. Many neighborhoods are also best explored on foot, though be prepared for some serious hills!

4. Bring Comfortable Shoes

Speaking of hills – San Francisco is full of them. Whether you’re climbing Lombard Street or wandering up to Coit Tower, you’ll be grateful for comfy walking shoes.

5. Don’t Call It “San Fran”

Locals usually say “SF” or “the City.” Calling it “San Fran” is the quickest way to out yourself as a tourist.

6. Book Alcatraz Tickets in Advance

If visiting Alcatraz Island is on your list (and it should be!), book tickets well ahead of time. They often sell out weeks in advance, especially in summer.

7. Explore Beyond the Tourist Spots

Yes, you’ll want to see Fisherman’s Wharf, ride a cable car, and take that Golden Gate photo. But don’t stop there. Check out the colorful murals in the Mission District, the Victorian houses at Alamo Square, and the trendy shops and cafés in Hayes Valley.

8. Bring a Reusable Water Bottle

San Francisco has some of the cleanest tap water in the country, straight from the Sierra Nevada. Save money (and the planet) by refilling your bottle instead of buying plastic.

9. Try the Local Food

Don’t leave without tasting clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl, Mission-style burritos, a Ghirardelli sundae and maybe even some quirky ice cream flavors from Bi-Rite or Humphry Slocombe. Foodies, this city is heaven.

10. Respect the Microclimates

Different neighborhoods can have totally different weather. It might be sunny in the Mission but foggy at Ocean Beach. Check the forecast, but also be prepared for surprises.

11. Budget Accordingly

San Francisco is one of the most expensive cities in the U.S. – from hotels to meals. But you can balance your budget with free activities like strolling Golden Gate Park, hiking up Twin Peaks, or wandering Chinatown.

12. Be Aware of Safety

Like any big city, San Francisco has its challenges. Petty theft (like car break-ins) is common. Don’t leave valuables in your car, keep an eye on your belongings, and stick to well-lit areas at night.

13. Take a Day Trip

If you have extra time, the Bay Area has incredible day trip options. Head to Muir Woods to walk among giant redwoods, Napa Valley for wine tasting, or Half Moon Bay for coastal views.

14. Hike to Battery Spencer

One of the biggest highlights of my trip to San Fransisco was hiking the short trail up to Battery Spencer to get that iconic view of the Golden Gate Bridge with the city skyline in the background. 100% worth the trek!

15. Fall in Love with this Beautiful City

San Francisco is eclectic, artistic, and full of personality. From quirky neighborhoods to eccentric locals, the city thrives on individuality. Lean into it, and you’ll fall in love with SF’s unique charm.

San Francisco is one of those cities that leaves an impression long after you’ve left. Whether you’re wandering through foggy streets, tasting incredible food, or watching the sunset over the bay, every day feels like an adventure. With these tips, you’ll be ready to navigate your first trip like a pro and discover why so many people fall in love with this city by the bay.
