San Francisco is one of those cities that instantly feels iconic. From the steep hills and cable cars to the sweeping bay views and colorful neighborhoods, it’s a place full of energy, history, and plenty of things to see and do. On my visit, I tried to balance the must-see landmarks with some laid-back exploring, and I honestly fell in love with the city’s vibe – easily one of my favorite places I’ve visited in the States (living my best Full House and Princess Diaries life!) Here are the top things to do in San Francisco that should be on every first-timer’s list.
1. Walk (or Ride!) Across the Golden Gate Bridge
You can’t visit San Francisco without seeing the Golden Gate Bridge. Whether you walk, bike, or just admire it from a viewpoint, it’s an unforgettable experience. My tip? Head to Battery Spencer or Crissy Field for some of the best photo ops. And don’t forget a jacket – the wind is no joke!

2. Visit Alcatraz Island
A trip to Alcatraz is both fascinating and a little eerie. The former prison sits in the middle of the bay, and the audio tour really brings the stories of inmates and guards to life. I recommend booking tickets in advance since tours sell out quickly.

3. Ride a Cable Car
It’s touristy, yes – but it was one of my favorite things from my visit! Riding a San Francisco cable car up and down the city’s steep streets felt iconic, like a main character moment. Try the Powell-Hyde line for the most scenic ride. You can buy a day pass on the Muni app (best value) so you can ride it as many times as you like!

4. Explore Fisherman’s Wharf & Pier 39
This area is definitely busy, but it’s also iconic. You’ll find sea lions lounging on the docks (which could’ve entertained me for hours!), fresh seafood stands (clam chowder in sourdough bread bowls are a must), and plenty of shops to wander through.

5. Stroll Through Chinatown
San Francisco’s Chinatown is the largest outside of Asia, and it’s a cultural experience you don’t want to miss. The ornate Dragon Gate is the perfect entry point, and from there you can explore markets, temples, and incredible restaurants.
6. Relax at Golden Gate Park
Bigger than New York’s Central Park, Golden Gate Park is full of gardens, lakes, museums, and walking trails. It’s the perfect spot to slow down and enjoy a break from the busy city streets (and also spot the mansion that was used as Princess Mia’s high school in Princess Diaries!)

7. Check Out Lombard Street
Known as the “crookedest street in the world,” Lombard Street is a quirky San Francisco landmark with eight tight hairpin turns. You can walk it or drive it – either way, it’s fun to see.

8. Explore the Painted Ladies at Alamo Square
These colorful Victorian houses (made famous by Full House) are even prettier in real life. Alamo Square Park across the street has fantastic views of the skyline, making it a great picnic spot.

9. Discover Ghirardelli Square
Explore the shops and restaurants at Ghirardelli Square (and be sure to stop by the Ghirardelli shop because this was the original chocolate factory and… it would be rude not to, right?)

10. Wander Through Haight-Ashbury
This neighborhood is full of character and history, especially tied to the 1960s counterculture movement. Today, you’ll find vintage shops, quirky cafés, and a funky vibe that makes it fun to explore.
San Francisco is a city that packs so much into a small area – stunning views, historic landmarks, and neighborhoods that each feel like their own little world. Whether you’re here for a weekend or a week, there’s so much to discover.
