Of course, we have to start with the big one! While many travelers stay overnight in Aguas Calientes, it’s technically possible to do a day trip from Cusco if you plan carefully. Hop on an early train from Ollantaytambo or Poroy and spend the day exploring one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. The easiest way to do a day trip from Cusco is to book a guided tour.

Tip: Book your tickets and train rides in advance — Machu Picchu is extremely popular.

2. Sacred Valley Tour

The Sacred Valley is full of fascinating stops, making it perfect for a day-long adventure. Highlights include:

Pisac Market & Ruins – Traditional crafts, stunning terraces, and a lively local market.
Ollantaytambo Fortress – Incredible Inca architecture still in use today.
Moray & Maras – Circular agricultural terraces and the famous salt mines.

Tip: Consider joining a guided tour or hiring a driver for a smooth day of exploring. I did an ATV tour to Moray and Maras Salt Mines and it was so much fun – would definitely recommend!

3. Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca)

For breathtaking landscapes, Rainbow Mountain is a must-visit. The hike can be challenging due to altitude, but the colorful mineral-rich slopes are absolutely worth it. Sadly I was sick the day I had planned to visit Rainbow Mountain, but it’s top of my list for my next Peru trip!

Tip: Go early to avoid crowds and catch the best light for photos. Bring layers – the weather changes quickly at 5,000m above sea level.

4. Humantay Lake

For a stunning turquoise lake framed by snow-capped peaks, the Humantay Lake trek is hard to beat. It’s a moderately challenging hike, usually done as a full-day trip from Cusco and its is STUNNING. I would definitely recommend this day trip!

Tip: Pack snacks, water, and a camera – the views are unforgettable.

5. Maras & Moray

If you’re short on time, a half-day trip to Moray terraces and Maras salt mines is perfect. Moray’s circular agricultural terraces show the ingenuity of the Incas, while Maras offers the iconic salt evaporation ponds with incredible photo opportunities.

6. Tipón & Pikillacta

For history buffs, Tipón and Pikillacta offer insights into pre-Inca and Inca civilizations. Tipón features impressive irrigation terraces, while Pikillacta is a sprawling Wari archaeological site. Both are quieter than the Sacred Valley, making for a peaceful day trip.
