Planning a solo trip to Peru? Don’t skip Lima! While many travelers rush through the capital en route to Machu Picchu, Lima is a vibrant, flavorful, and unexpectedly fun destination and a great way to ease yourself into your Peruvian life – especially for solo travelers. From its world-renowned food scene and cliffside walks to buzzing bohemian neighborhoods, there are tons of exciting things to do in Lima, Peru that are safe, social, and easy to enjoy on your own.

Whether you’re craving a dose of culture, a foodie fix, or just some quality “me time” with an ocean view, here’s your ultimate solo travel guide to Lima.

1. Walk the Malecón in Miraflores

The Malecón de Miraflores is Lima’s iconic clifftop walkway and one of the best free things to do in Lima. Stretching along the Pacific Coast, this scenic path offers ocean breezes, parks, gardens, public art, and some seriously photo-worthy views.

Be sure to stop by:

  • Parque del Amor (Love Park) – with colorful mosaics and a romantic sculpture overlooking the sea
  • Paragliders floating overhead – fun to watch or try yourself (more on that later!)

2. Eat ALL the Peruvian Food: Ceviche, Pisco & More

Lima is considered the culinary capital of South America, and solo travelers will love how food-centered the city is. From budget bites to world-class restaurants, there’s a delicious experience for every appetite.

Must-try Peruvian dishes include:

  • Ceviche (a Lima staple!)
  • Causa rellena
  • Lomo saltado (stir-fry)
  • Picarones (Peruvian donuts)… YUM.
  • Pisco Sour – the national cocktail (and an essential peru drink of choice)
  • La Lucha Sangucheria Criolla – a famous sandwich shop in Peru!

Want a guided foodie experience? Join a Lima food tour or cooking class. It’s a safe and social way to explore flavors, markets, and local favorites.

3. Explore Barranco: Lima’s Bohemian Neighborhood

Just south of Miraflores, Barranco is where Lima gets cool. This colorful, artsy district is packed with street murals, indie cafés, galleries, and a laid-back vibe that’s perfect for solo wandering.

Top highlights:

  • Puente de los Suspiros (Bridge of Sighs)
  • Tostaduría Bisetti – a cozy local café
  • Quirky shops, boutique art spaces, and live music spots

It’s very walkable from Miraflores but is quite far so consider taking a bike tour to explore this area.

4. Go Paragliding Over the Pacific

Yes, you can literally fly in Lima. You can paraglide tandem off the cliffs of Miraflores with an experienced pilot. No experience needed—just bring your sense of adventure!

You’ll soar over the coastline, high-rises, and city parks for about 10 minutes. A thrilling way to see the city from a whole new perspective. (I didn’t try it myself but it would be very easy to join a tour as there are plenty of vendors offering flights in the main shopping mall area!)

5. Step Back in Time at Lima’s Historic Center

If you’re a history buff (or just love gorgeous architecture), head to Lima’s UNESCO-listed Historic Centre. It’s a short Uber ride from Miraflores and absolutely worth a few hours. A great way to learn about a new city is joining a walking tour like this one.

Top sights to see:

  • Plaza Mayor (Main Square) – surrounded by grand colonial buildings
  • Basilica and Convent of San Francisco – home to creepy cool catacombs
  • Ornate wooden balconies – unique to Lima’s architecture

6. Stock Up at the Inka and Indian Markets

Shopping for souvenirs? The Inka Market and Indian Market in Miraflores are the ultimate spots for colorful, handcrafted gifts.

You’ll find:

  • Llama wool sweaters and ponchos
  • Handmade textiles and jewelry
  • Cute alpaca plushies and Andean art

Pro Tip: I didn’t realise this until later in my trip that prices are negotiable, so don’t be afraid to bargain a little!

7. See the Magic Water Circuit Show

Looking for a fun solo evening plan? Head to the Circuito Mágico del Agua in Parque de la Reserva. This dazzling light and fountain show is fun and affordable! Expect:

  • Music, colorful lights, and choreographed water displays
  • Family-friendly, safe atmosphere
  • A fun, budget-friendly night out

If you’re worried about venturing to Lima city at night, join a tour like this one which includes pick up and drop off to your hotel.

8. Go on a tour to get your bearings

A great way to explore any new place is joining a tour – whether it be a walking, cycling or bus tour to get to know the area as well as learn some history and fun facts you probably wouldn’t find out on your own.

Here are some tour ideas:

9. Relax at a Local Café

Need some downtime? Lima’s coffee scene is growing fast, and solo travelers will love these chill spots:

  • Pan de la Chola – for fresh bread and hip vibes
  • Puku Puku Café – great cold brew and comfy corners
  • Tostaduría Bisetti – located in Barranco and a local favorite

Bring a book or journal and soak in the Peruvian pace of life.

10. Catch the Sunset at El Parque del Faro

Finish your day with a stroll to Lighthouse Park (Parque del Faro) at the northern end of the Malecón. It’s a popular local hangout for sunset watchers, dog walkers, and couples.

Bring:

  • A snack or picnic
  • A sweater (evenings get chilly!)
  • Your camera—this spot delivers serious cliffside magic (if you’re lucky enough to be in Lima on a rare non-cloudy day that is!) Even if it’s only cloudy, the views are still really pretty.

Solo Travel Tips for Lima, Peru

  • Use Uber or Cabify for safe, affordable transportation.
  • Stick to tourist-friendly areas like Miraflores and Barranco—especially after dark.
  • Don’t drink the tap water – this goes for anywhere in Peru, always go for bottled.
  • Keep an eye on your belongings in crowded spots.
  • Chat with locals! Peruvians are warm and curious—but trust your gut if someone seems pushy as they just be trying to sell you some souvenirs from their backpack (speaking from experience lol)
