If you’re lucky enough to have a port day in Olden, Norway – congrats! You’re in for one of the most jaw-dropping landscapes of your entire cruise. As a crew member who’s explored quite a few ports, I can honestly say this one is a true showstopper. Nestled in the heart of Norway’s fjord country, Olden is peaceful, dramatic, and green. And the absolute must-do here? A hike to the breathtaking Briksdal Glacier.

Why Visit Briksdal Glacier?
Briksdal (also known as Briksdalsbreen) is one of the most accessible arms of the Jostedalsbreen Glacier, Europe’s largest. It’s located in Jostedalsbreen National Park and sits at the end of a glacial lake surrounded by towering mountains, lush forest, and cascading waterfalls. Trust me – this is what travel bucket lists were made for.
How to Get to the Glacier
From the cruise port in Olden, it’s about a 30-minute drive to the Briksdal Glacier trailhead. Most cruise lines offer shore excursions like this one, or you can hop on a local tour bus or taxi if you prefer to go at your own pace. The drive itself is gorgeous, passing through picturesque farms and mirrored lakes. Keep your camera ready!

The Hike Itself
The hike to the glacier is roughly 3 kilometers (about 1.8 miles) each way – so manageable, but expect a bit of a workout. The path is paved but moderately steep, especially at the beginning. Along the way, you’ll be treated to waterfalls (including the powerful Kleivafossen), mountain peaks, and eventually, an up-close view of the shimmering blue glacier.
If hiking isn’t your thing, no worries – you can opt for a “Troll Car” (adorable name, right?) which is a motorized cart that takes you most of the way to the top.

What to Bring
- A sense of adventure!
- Comfortable walking shoes or hiking boots
- A water bottle (there’s a water fountain near the trailhead)
- A rain jacket or layers—it’s Norway, after all
- Your camera (or phone—you’ll want to take lots of photos)

Pro Tips from a Crew Member
- Layer up: It might be sunny at the port and chilly by the glacier – dress accordingly!
- Go early: If your ship docks in the morning, head out as early as you can to beat the crowds. The peacefulness of the trail in the early hours is pure magic.
- Watch for wildlife: I saw mountain goats on a hike here – major Disney-princess-in-the-wild vibes.
- Don’t skip the gift shop: It’s surprisingly cute and has locally made souvenirs and snacks.

Briksdal Glacier is a must if your cruise stops in Olden. It’s one of those rare port adventures that feels like stepping into a fairytale – and the fact that you can do it in just a few hours? Even better. Whether you hike it yourself or ride the Troll Car, make sure you don’t miss the chance to see this natural wonder up close.
