Japan isn’t just known for its rich culture and beautiful landscapes—its food is an adventure in itself! My trip to Japan introduced me to some of the most memorable (and kawaii!) foodie moments I’ve ever experienced on my travels. Here’s a list of my favorite must-try snacks from my trip to Japan!
1. Taiyaki
My hands down favorite thing I had in Japan was… Taiyaki! This fish-shaped cake is filled custard (traditionally sweet red bean paste but custard is the best in my opinion!) and has a warm, crispy texture on the outside and the gooey filling on the inside. It’s sweet, comforting, and just downright delicious. You know how people sometimes ask if you could live on one food for the rest of your life, what would it be? It’s taiyaki, no hesitation.

2. Ichigo Daifuku
If you haven’t tried Ichigo Daifuku, you’re missing out! This is a delightful Japanese treat consisting of a chewy rice cake filled with sweetened red bean paste and a fresh strawberry in the center. The mix of flavors and and gooey textures is simply irresistible. It was one of my go-to snacks while exploring the country, and I couldn’t get enough of it!

3. Disney Snacks: Tokyo Disneyland
Tokyo Disneyland is famous for its magical atmosphere, and the snacks were just as enchanting. From adorable Mickey-shaped waffles to creatively flavored popcorn, it was a snack lover’s paradise. My favorite was the Alien Dumplings and the Mike Wazowski Melon Pan! Because disney snacks are a whole category of their own, I have a whole post dedicated to my favorite Tokyo Disneyland snacks here!

4. Okonomiyaki
Okonomiyaki is Japan’s savory pancake, loaded with cabbage, pork, and drizzled with mayonnaise and okonomiyaki sauce. It’s made right in front of you on a hot grill, and every bite is a savory, umami-packed treat. An essential must-try dish on your trip to Japan!

5. Pocky
Pocky is Japan’s iconic snack, and it’s been a favorite of mine since my high school Japan trip way back! The crunchy biscuit sticks coated in rich, creamy chocolate (or other flavors) are addictive. There’s a variety of flavors—strawberry, matcha, and even chocolate banana. It’s the perfect snack to enjoy on the go!

6. Universal Studios Snacks
If you’re visiting Universal Studios Japan, the snacks there are a treat in themselves. From Minion-shaped steam buns to Harry Potter Butterbeer, there is no shortage of fun and delicious (not to mention cute!) foods at this park!

7. Cheese Tarts
For those who love cheese, Japan’s Cheese Tarts are a dream come true. These little tarts are filled with creamy, tangy cheese custard and have a perfectly flaky crust. The balance between sweetness and cheese flavor was just amazing. I had to get one (or three) every day of my trip!

8. Chicken Katsu Curry
If you love comfort food, then Chicken Katsu Curry should be on your list. This hearty dish features a crispy breaded chicken cutlet served with a rich, flavorful curry sauce and rice. The flavors were deep and satisfying—perfect for a filling meal after a day of sightseeing.

9. Crepes
This kawaii Crepe was one of the most Instagram-worthy treats I had in Japan. These sweet crepes are loaded with whipped cream, fruits, chocolate, and sometimes even ice cream, all rolled up into a fun, easy-to-eat snack. The creamy filling and crunchy crepe made it a great combination that I couldn’t resist!

10. Panda Anman (steam Buns)
Adorable and delicious, Panda Anman are steamed buns filled with red bean paste, and they are shaped like cute pandas! These little buns were not only fun to look at but also absolutely tasty.

11. Beef Sukiyaki
A true highlight of my trip, Beef Sukiyaki was an unforgettable dish. The tender beef, vegetables, and tofu simmered in a savory-sweet soy sauce broth made for a comforting, flavorful meal. Served with a raw egg to dip the hot ingredients into, it was the epitome of Japanese home-cooked comfort food. Each bite was warm, hearty, and absolutely delicious—definitely one of my top favorites from the trip!

12. Japanese Chocolate
Japanese chocolate is on another level. Whether it’s Matcha Kit-Kats, chocolate-covered strawberries, or beautifully crafted chocolate bars, each piece was smooth, creamy, and incredibly flavorful. I found myself sneaking a bite of chocolate every chance I got—trust me, it’s hard to go back to regular chocolate after experiencing Japan’s version!

13. Takoyaki (Octopus Balls)
Takoyaki is a must-try street food in Japan, and these little octopus-filled dough balls are crispy on the outside and gooey on the inside. Topped with bonito flakes, pickled ginger, and a rich sauce, they pack a punch of flavor. Just be careful if you’re eating these on Miyajima Island, the deer might try to steal them from you!

14. Rilakkuma Hot Chocolate
For a cozy treat, I couldn’t resist this adorable Rilakkuma Hot Chocolate. Served in adorable cups and topped with fluffy marshmallows, this drink was both visually charming and delicious. The creamy, rich chocolate was the perfect pick-me-up on chilly days.

15. Momiji Manju
A specialty from Hiroshima, Momiji Manju are sweet, maple leaf-shaped buns filled with red bean paste or custard. These little treats are perfect souvenirs and had a soft, delicate flavor that I couldn’t resist nibbling on while walking through the scenic spots of the city.

16. Vending Machine Drinks
Japan’s vending machines are legendary, and the variety of drinks available is mind-blowing. From refreshing iced teas to unique fruit drinks, I tried a variety of beverages from these convenient machines. While some were delicious, others were a little too experimental for my taste, but it was all part of the fun! The corn soup was a weird one and ‘Calpis’ was just funny to say haha!

17. Teriyaki Chicken Sandwich
The Teriyaki Chicken Sandwich was a quick, satisfying snack I grabbed on the go from Starbucks. If you’re craving something a bit more Western, this is a great choice. The chicken was tender, and the teriyaki sauce added a nice glaze to each bite. Bonus points if you can find this Starbucks in Asahikawa, Hokkaido! (the most stunning wintery views of all time!)

18. Ramen
Japan is home to some of the best Ramen, and I had to try a bowl during my visit. I enjoyed the warm, savory broth and tender noodles.

19. Sakuramochi
Sakura-flavored foods were everywhere during my trip, and Sakuramochi was no exception. A sweet rice cake filled with red bean paste and wrapped in a salted cherry blossom leaf, this treat was both delicate and refreshing. While I enjoyed the flavors, I have to admit it wasn’t my absolute favorite, but definitely worth trying for a traditional snack vibe.

20. Mitarashi Dango
Mitarashi Dango, famous in Takayama is a skewered rice dumpling drizzled in a sweet soy sauce glaze. The flavor was a little different from what I expected, but it had a nice balance of savory and sweet. While it wasn’t my top favorite, I can see why it’s a traditional street food snack that many enjoy.

Japan’s food scene is next level, with a mix of traditional flavors and fun twists. Every meal, snack, and treat was a highlight, and I can’t wait to go back and try even more! Whether you’re a foodie or just someone who enjoys good food, Japan should be at the top of your list.
