Amsterdam, the vibrant capital of the Netherlands, is famous for its charming canals, buzzing bike culture, world-class museums, and delicious Dutch treats. I only had 24 hours in Amsterdam before beginning a cruise contract (#shiplife), but I managed to squeeze in a full day of exploring – and I’m already dreaming about going back (mainly for the stroopwafels!). If you’re visiting Amsterdam on a layover or short trip, here’s how to make the most of your one perfect day.

Where to Stay in Amsterdam
To make the most of your time in Amsterdam, be sure to choose accommodation in the heart of all the action.
Accommodation Recommendations:
Luxury: Park Plaza Victoria Amsterdam
Mid-Range: DoubleTree by Hilton Amsterdam Centraal Station
Budget: Durty Nelly’s Inn
Morning: Cruise the Canals & Visit the Van Gogh Museum
Start your day in true Amsterdam fashion – with a peaceful canal stroll or a scenic canal cruise. Whether you walk, bike, or boat, the historic canal belt is the heart of the city and the best way to get your bearings.
After soaking up the views, head to the Van Gogh Museum in the Museumplein district. Even though I didn’t make it there this time, it’s at the top of my list for next visit! The museum holds the largest collection of Van Gogh’s paintings, including Sunflowers and The Bedroom, and gives insight into the artist’s fascinating (and tragic) life.
💡 Pro Tip: Book Van Gogh Museum tickets in advance – they sell out fast, especially during peak seasons.

Late Morning: Relax in Vondelpark & Wander Through Jordaan
After your art fix, take a leisurely walk through Vondelpark, Amsterdam’s largest and most beloved green space. Grab a coffee from a park café and enjoy the tranquil atmosphere among locals walking dogs, cycling, or picnicking.
Next, make your way to the Jordaan neighborhood – a cozy, artsy district full of narrow lanes, boutique shops, indie galleries, and charming cafés. If you’re there on a Saturday, stop by Noordermarkt, a bustling market with vintage finds, organic produce, and tasty local snacks.

Lunch: Taste Dutch Favorites (Don’t Skip the Stroopwafel!)
For lunch, dive into classic Dutch street food. My favorite discovery? Stroopwafels – thin waffle cookies filled with warm caramel. I grabbed one from a street vendor and it was life-changing. If you’re looking for something savory, try bitterballen, a crispy, deep-fried Dutch snack filled with a creamy meat ragout. You’ll find both at street stalls, cafés, and casual restaurants across the city.

Afternoon: Anne Frank House
In the afternoon, visit one of Amsterdam’s most moving landmarks: the Anne Frank House. Located along the Prinsengracht canal, this powerful museum tells the story of Anne Frank and her family’s time in hiding during World War II. You can walk through the secret annex where she wrote her famous diary, and reflect on her legacy.
⚠️ Tickets sell out quickly, so book as early as possible – I missed out this time, but it’s a must-see if you can.
Evening: Sunset at A’DAM Lookout & Dinner by the Canals
As the sun starts to set, head across the IJ River to A’DAM Lookout, a 22-story observation deck with sweeping views of the city. The brave can try the “Over the Edge” swing, which lets you dangle over the edge of the building for a thrilling (and slightly terrifying!) experience.
For dinner, head back to the city center and enjoy a canal-side meal at one of Amsterdam’s many cozy restaurants. Whether you’re in the mood for modern Dutch cuisine or a casual pub bite, there’s no better way to end your day than with good food and stunning views.

Amsterdam in a Day
From wandering along picturesque canals and indulging in stroopwafels to exploring museums and historic sites, Amsterdam is packed with experiences that fit perfectly into a one-day itinerary. Even with limited time, this magical city makes a big impression. I can’t wait to return and dig even deeper – hopefully with a few extra days (and many more stroopwafels!)
